Physical Properties:White monoclinic crystals or crystalline powder, hygroscopic. Freely soluble in water forming a strongly acidic solution; insoluble in liquid ammonia. Upon heating, it loses water of crystallization to form the anhydrous salt, which further decomposes to sodium pyrosulfate. Corrosive, irritating to skin and eyes.
Uses:Used as a flux and disinfectant, and in the production of sulfates and sodium alum. In the textile industry, it is used as an assistant for acid dyes; in metallurgy, as a flux for mineral decomposition; also used in making toilet cleaners, deodorants, and for oil drilling and soil improvement.
