Slightly soluble in water and ethanol, practically insoluble in chloroform, ether and benzene; soluble in alkaline solutions such as sodium hydroxide. Melting point approximately 192–195°C (decomposition).
Uses:This is an intestinal sulfonamide antibacterial agent mainly used for the treatment of bacillary dysentery, enteritis and ulcerative colitis, and also for the prevention of infection before intestinal surgery. After oral administration, it is poorly absorbed in the intestine and slowly hydrolyzed to release sulfathiazole, which exerts bacteriostatic action.
