Physical Properties:White flaky crystals with a strong fecal odor, floral at high dilution. Melting point 52-53°C, boiling point 253-254°C, density 1.22 g/cm³. Slightly soluble in water, readily soluble in ethanol, ether, benzene and other organic solvents. Due to the nitrogen lone pair participating in aromatic conjugation, it is weakly basic. The double bonds of the heterocyclic ring do not readily undergo addition reactions. Under strong acids, it can undergo dimerization and trimerization. It can undergo aromatic electrophilic substitution with preferential substitution at position 3, and reactions such as Grignard reaction, aldol condensation, and Mannich reaction can occur at position 3.
Uses:Used to prepare floral fragrances such as jasmine, lilac, orange blossom, gardenia, lotus, etc.; combined with methylindole to imitate artificial civet; extremely small amounts used in chocolate, coffee, nut and other food flavors. Also an important intermediate for synthesizing tryptophan, plant hormones, indomethacin and other drugs and alkaloids. Used as a plant growth regulator.
