It effloresces in dry air and loses its water of crystallization when heated to 120°C, converting to anhydrous borax. The aqueous solution is weakly alkaline with a pH of about 9.24 (0.1 mol/L).
Uses:Primarily used as a flux and glaze component in the glass and ceramics industry, and as a melting aid in enamel production. It is also used as a flame retardant, preservative, herbicide, trace fertilizer, and as a raw material for manufacturing various borate chemical products.
