Physical Properties:Light yellow transparent oily liquid at room temperature, molecular weight 282.47, melting point 13.4°C, boiling point 286°C (at 100 mmHg), relative density 0.8935 (20/4°C). Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, gasoline and other organic solvents. Hydrogenation converts it to stearic acid; reaction with nitric acid isomerizes to the trans isomer (elaidic acid, mp 44–45°C). It has the general chemical properties of organic carboxylic acids and unsaturated double bonds. Prolonged exposure to air causes autoxidation, partially forming carbonyl-containing substances with a rancid odor.
Uses:Used to produce paint driers (lead, manganese and cobalt salts), fishnet preservatives (copper salt), fabric waterproofing agents (aluminum salt) and rodenticides (barium salt). Epoxidation yields epoxy oleate plasticizers; oxidative cleavage produces azelaic acid for polyamide resin. Also used in manufacturing dimer acids and alkyd resins for inks, coatings, wool spinning, and wood industry, as well as pesticide emulsifiers, industrial solvents, mineral flotation agents and release agents.
