Physical Properties:Anhydrous sodium sulfide appears as white or light yellow crystalline powder, easily deliquescent, with a strong rotten-egg odor (due to release of hydrogen sulfide). It is freely soluble in water, forming a strongly alkaline solution (pH > 12), slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in ether. Melting point 1180°C (decomposes), density 1.856 g/cm³ at 25°C. It is easily oxidized in air and releases toxic H₂S gas when exposed to acids. The nonahydrate is colorless or light yellow crystals, losing water of crystallization at about 50°C, density 1.427 g/cm³.
Uses:Used in the leather industry as a dehairing agent, in the paper industry for Kraft pulping to decompose lignin, and in the textile industry as a reducing agent for sulfur dyes. It is also applied in mineral flotation, wastewater treatment for precipitating heavy metal ions, and production of chemical raw materials such as sodium thiosulfate and sodium polysulfide.
