White crystalline or colorless glassy crystals, existing in α and β forms: α-form melting point 742.5℃, density 2.28 g/cm³; β-form melting point 664℃, density 2.75 g/cm³. Highly hygroscopic, soluble in water and glycerol, slowly soluble in methanol, forming 13%~16% solutions; the aqueous solution is weakly alkaline, insoluble in ethanol. In moist air, it absorbs water and converts to decahydrate or pentahydrate borax.
Uses:Used as a carrier for lubricants in metal wire drawing, and as a stabilizer and framework material in refractories. Also used as a flux for glass, glazes, solders, non-ferrous metals and alloys. It serves as a set retarder in cement and concrete, a pH buffer in water systems, and an emulsifier for paraffin wax. Additionally, it is a basic raw material for producing boron compounds.
