Physical Properties:Trigonal crystal system, commonly occurring as rhombohedral and ditrigonal scalenohedral crystals; colorless or white, and colored gray, yellow, red, or brown when impurities are present; vitreous luster, Mohs hardness 3, density 2.6–2.8 g/cm³; thermally decomposes at about 825°C; insoluble in water, soluble in dilute acids with release of carbon dioxide.
Uses:Mainly used as a raw material for building materials, cement production, metallurgical fluxes and glass batch, and as a filler in rubber, plastics, coatings and paper. High-purity calcite can also be used to produce quicklime and precipitated calcium carbonate, and is applied in flue gas desulfurization and water treatment.
