Decomposes at 500 °C; when strongly ignited it forms thorium dioxide and emits intense light when incandescent. Highly hygroscopic; store in an airtight container. Radioactive.
Uses:Used as a reference reagent for the volumetric determination of fluoride. Employed in the manufacture of gas mantles and in tungsten-molybdenum material processing; also used as a catalyst precursor and for preparing other thorium compounds.
