Physical Properties:White crystalline powder. It reacts violently with water or moisture, releasing hydrogen gas and forming aluminum hydroxide and lithium hydroxide. Melting point approximately 125°C (decomposition). Relative density 0.917 (25°C). Soluble in ether, tetrahydrofuran and other organic solvents; insoluble in hydrocarbons. It is a strong reducing agent, stable in dry air but easily absorbs moisture and decomposes in humid air.
Uses:Used as a reducing agent in organic synthesis, particularly for the selective reduction of carbonyl compounds. It can reduce aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amides and nitriles to the corresponding alcohols or amines. Also used to prepare other metal hydrides.
