It is a strong oxidizing agent with a standard electrode potential of about +1.44 V for the Ce⁴⁺/Ce³⁺ couple; decomposes above 350 °C. The anhydrous form has a density of about 3.91 g/cm³, and the product is usually supplied in the hydrated form.
Uses:Mainly used as a standard oxidizing agent in redox titration analysis for the determination of metal ions such as iron, chromium and vanadium.
