Soluble in carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and other organic solvents; slightly soluble in water. Strong oxidizing property; may react violently with flammable or oxidizable substances.
Uses:Used as a strong oxidizing agent in organic synthesis for selective oxidation of olefins, alcohols, ethers, ketones and other compounds; employed as a fixation and staining agent for biological samples in electron microscopy; also used in metal surface etching and oxidation reactions in chemical analysis.
