Insoluble in water, soluble in hot ethanol, ether, chloroform and benzene. Stable in air, decomposes releasing formaldehyde under high temperature or acidic/alkaline conditions.
Uses:Mainly used as an organic synthesis intermediate, serving as a formaldehyde substitute reagent to introduce methylene units in pharmaceutical and pesticide synthesis. Also used as a rubber vulcanizing agent, metal surface treatment additive, and extreme-pressure anti-wear agent for lubricating oils. It can be further used to prepare high-purity sulfur sources and sulfur-containing compounds.
