Physical Properties:Colorless to bluish-white orthorhombic crystal, soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol, salty and cool taste, aqueous solution is slightly alkaline. Relative density 1.79, pH 6.8-8, melting point 70-80°C, slightly efflorescent in hot air. Starts losing partial crystal water at 60°C, loses 3 water molecules at 100°C, and loses all crystal water at 215°C to become anhydrous salt. Solubility: 138.3 g per 100 mL water at 30°C.
Uses:Used in chemical analysis as a component of Fehling's reagent and as a masking agent for metal ions. Also used as a reducing agent in plate making, mirror making and thermos flask industry; in the telecommunications industry for making crystal speakers and microphones; in fertilizer industry as an ADA desulfurizer; and in food industry for detection of reducing sugars.
