Physical Properties:White crystalline powder, hygroscopic, freely soluble in water, ethanol and methanol, slightly soluble in acetone, insoluble in ether and benzene. Melting point 195-200°C (decomp.). DL-Carnitine is a racemic mixture with no optical activity.
Uses:Used as pharmaceutical intermediate, food nutritional fortifier and feed additive. It participates in β-oxidation of fatty acids, promotes fat metabolism and energy release. It is also used clinically to prevent and treat carnitine deficiency, and to enhance exercise endurance and improve cardiac function.
