Physical Properties:Dark blue powder with a coppery luster. Insoluble in water, ethanol, and ether; soluble in hot aniline, concentrated sulfuric acid (giving a yellowish-green color), and molten paraffin. Sublimes at 390°C and begins to decompose at about 300°C. Under alkaline conditions, it can be reduced to leuco-indigo (colorless), which reverts to indigo upon oxidation in air.
Uses:Primarily used for dyeing and printing of natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, and silk, and is a classic blue vat dye. It is also used as a food colorant (restricted or banned in some countries, including China) and as a biological stain. In industry, it is further used in the preparation of indigo derivatives and as an organic pigment.
