Physical Properties:White powder; practically insoluble in water, soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and other acids with evolution of carbon dioxide; insoluble in ethanol. Density approx. 4.43 g/cm³. Decomposes at about 1300°C into barium oxide and carbon dioxide. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse, away from heat and ignition sources, and keep separate from acids and food chemicals.
Uses:Used in the glass and ceramic industry as a roasting additive to increase glass refractive index, hardness and scratch resistance, and to improve ceramic hardness, wear resistance and thermal expansion coefficient. In the electronics industry, it is used in miniature multilayer ceramic capacitors and TV/CRT glass bulbs as an X-ray shielding material. It is also used to produce other barium salts, for steel carburizing, metal surface treatment, and removal of sulfate ions in water treatment.
