Physical Properties:White monoclinic crystal or amorphous powder, odorless and tasteless, stable in air. Relative density 2.16, slightly soluble in water with a weakly alkaline aqueous solution; solubility in water is 0.02% at 15°C. It is readily soluble in acids and ammonium salt solutions. Upon calcination, it decomposes into magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide; it also decomposes with effervescence when exposed to dilute acids.
Uses:Used as a nutrient fortifier, flour treatment agent, anticaking agent, and stable leavening agent, mainly in wheat flour and chewing gum ingredients. It is also used in pharmaceuticals and daily chemicals as an antacid and filler.
