Light-sensitive; upon exposure to light, photoreduction occurs in which Fe(III) is reduced to Fe(II). Loses water of crystallization at about 100°C and decomposes on further heating.
Uses:Primarily used as the photosensitive reagent in a chemical actinometer (potassium ferrioxalate actinometer) for determining the quantum yield of UV-visible light. It is also employed as a photosensitizer and redox catalyst in organic synthesis, and can be used to prepare iron-based functional materials such as iron oxide nanoparticles, as well as a starting material for synthesizing iron complexes in the laboratory.
