Density 1.062–1.065 g/cm³, boiling point 109.7°C, melting point -85°C, flash point 24.4°C (76°F), refractive index 1.525, vapor pressure 28.7 mmHg at 25°C, vapor density 3.24 (vs air). Insoluble in water; soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, acetic acid and other organic solvents. Stable at room temperature and when heated to 300°C; decomposes to toxic sulfur oxide gases when heated in the presence of oxidizing agents. Reacts violently with oxidizing agents; vapor can form explosive mixtures with air, posing fire and explosion hazards in contact with open flames or high heat.
Uses:Used as an industrial solvent in the production of paints, resins, rubber and plastics, and as an important intermediate in the manufacture of pesticides such as insecticides and fungicides. In petroleum processing, it serves as a coking inhibitor to prevent coking reactions at high temperatures; in the rubber industry, it is used as a pre-vulcanizing agent to improve vulcanization speed and efficiency. It is also employed as a catalyst deactivator, anti-coking agent, and additive for fuels and lubricating oils.
