Melting point approximately 48-50°C, pKa about 4.7. Stable under alkaline conditions; heating readily causes dehydration to form crotonic acid.
Uses:Used in organic synthesis and biochemical research, and as a key monomer in the production of biodegradable polymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). As a ketone body metabolite, it is also used as a standard and diagnostic reagent in metabolic disorder research.
