Insoluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene and other organic solvents. Boiling point 208°C (decomposes at atmospheric pressure), melting point -25.0°C, density 1.177 g/cm³ at 20°C. Decomposes upon heating, releasing toxic gases; slowly hydrolyzes in hot water or alkaline conditions to form sulfuric acid and ethanol. It is strongly corrosive and reactive in nucleophilic substitution reactions.
Uses:Primarily used as an ethylating agent in organic synthesis to introduce ethyl groups into molecules for the production of pharmaceuticals, dyes, fragrances and rubber accelerators. Also used in the preparation of pesticide intermediates and in laboratory organic synthesis research.
