Physical Properties:White crystalline powder with a slight odor of chlorine. Freely soluble in water and ethanol, insoluble in benzene, chloroform and ether. The trihydrate loses water of crystallization at about 100°C and decomposes on melting. The aqueous solution is alkaline and slowly decomposes to release active chlorine. Keep in airtight containers protected from light. Active chlorine content about 12%.
Uses:Mainly used as a mild oxidizing agent and halogenating agent in organic synthesis for oxidation of alcohols, aldehydes and ketones; also employed as an efficient disinfectant, bleaching agent and water purifier; used as a detecting reagent in clinical and laboratory applications.
