Physical Properties:Dark green crystalline powder with bronze luster; freely soluble in water and ethanol, soluble in chloroform, sparingly soluble in ether; aqueous solution appears blue. Melting point approximately 190°C (decomposition); no fixed boiling point; decomposes upon heating emitting irritating fumes. Exhibits redox properties with reversible color changes upon treatment with strong oxidizing or reducing agents.
Uses:Used as a redox indicator and biological stain, widely applied in dyeing of textiles and paper; employed in aquaculture for prevention and treatment of fish diseases such as saprolegniasis and ichthyophthiriasis; also used in the pharmaceutical industry for preparing methylene blue injections as an antidote and diagnostic reagent.
