Slightly soluble in water; readily soluble in ethanol, chloroform, benzene and other organic solvents. Melting point -97.7°C, boiling point -24.2°C, flash point -50°C (closed cup), gas relative density (air=1) approx. 1.78. Flammable, may form explosive mixtures with air.
Uses:Mainly used in the synthesis of organosilicon compounds as a methylating agent for producing methylchlorosilanes and methyl cellulose. Also used in the production of pesticides, pharmaceutical intermediates, quaternary ammonium salt surfactants, and as a refrigerant, solvent and degreasing agent.
