Physical Properties:Colorless to light yellow volatile liquid with a strong offensive odor. Melting point approximately -98°C, boiling point approximately 37°C, flash point -36°C. Relative density approximately 0.846 (20°C), molecular weight 62.13. Slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in ethanol, ether and other organic solvents. Highly flammable; vapor with air forms explosive mixtures in the range of about 2.2%-19.7% by volume.
Uses:Mainly used as an organic synthesis intermediate; oxidation yields dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethyl sulfone, and reaction with alkyl halides generates sulfur ylides for the synthesis of fine chemicals such as fragrances and pesticides. In daily chemicals, it is used as a fragrance fixative to prolong scent retention. In analytical testing, it serves as a reference standard for GC/MS analysis of sulfur compounds and as an odor standard reagent. It is also used as a low-temperature solvent, oilfield plugging remover and metal electroplating brightener.
