Uses:2,2,2-Tribromoethanol is a commonly used anesthetic for small laboratory animals, including dogs, cats, mice, rats and gerbils, and provides effective general anesthesia at low doses. High concentrations are not suitable for major surgery in mice and may cause pathological changes in abdominal organs such as gastrointestinal stasis, peritonitis and fibrinous adhesions. It is also used as an organic synthesis intermediate in the preparation of halogenated alcohols.
