Insoluble in water; soluble in benzene, ether, chloroform and other organic solvents. It easily hydrolyzes in the presence of water or moisture to give triphenylmethanol and hydrogen chloride.
Uses:Mainly used as a trityl protecting reagent in organic synthesis for the selective protection of alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids and other functional groups. It is also used to prepare trityl ethers, tritylamines and other tritylated products, and can serve as a catalyst or intermediate in various reactions.
