Physical Properties:Red or purplish-red monoclinic crystals, hygroscopic in air. Relative density 1.924 g/cm³, melting point 86°C (partial dehydration); loses crystal water to become blue anhydrous form when heated to 110°C. Readily soluble in water with a pink aqueous solution, soluble in ethanol and acetone.
Uses:Mainly used for producing cobalt oxide and metallic cobalt as electronic materials for alloy applications; used as a colorant for glass and ceramics, electroplating additive, drier for paints and invisible ink; also used in manufacturing cobalt catalysts, color-changing silica gel humidity indicators, and ammonia absorbents. Cobalt chloride test paper is blue when dry and turns pink when moist, commonly used as a humidity indicator.
