Physical Properties:White cubic crystals or powder, odorless, with a salty and slightly bitter taste. Relative density 3.13, melting point 681°C, boiling point 1323°C (partial decomposition). Freely soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, acetone and glycerol. The aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline. Hygroscopic; turns yellow upon exposure to light and air due to liberation of free iodine.
Uses:Used as a pharmaceutical intermediate for synthesizing iodides and iodine-containing drugs; also applied in preparation of photographic emulsions, feed additives, iodized salt additives and analytical reagents.
