Physical Properties:Molecular weight: 278.01. Light blue-green crystals or granules, odorless. Relative density 1.897, melting point 64 °C. It effloresces in dry air; at 56.6 °C it changes to the tetrahydrate, at 65 °C to the monohydrate, at 300 °C to a white anhydrous powder, and begins to decompose at 480 °C. In moist air it is easily oxidized to basic ferric sulfate and turns yellow. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol; the aqueous solution is readily oxidized. Corrosive.
Uses:Used as an analytical reagent, water purifier, fertilizer and fruit/vegetable color developing agent. In agriculture it is used as a pesticide to control wheat smut, apple and pear scab, and fruit tree rot, and as a fertilizer and alkaline soil conditioner. It is a raw material for magnetic iron oxide, iron oxide red, iron blue inorganic pigments, iron catalysts and polyferric sulfate. It is also used as a topical astringent and blood tonic in medicine, and for photoengraving, ferrite raw materials and feed iron supplements.
