Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform and other organic solvents. Naturally occurs in turpentine and plant essential oils. Optically active, specific rotation ca. -51°.
Uses:Mainly used as a raw material for synthesis of camphor, borneol, terpineol and other fragrances and fine chemicals. Also serves as an intermediate for terpene resins, plasticizers and pharmaceuticals, and is widely used as a chiral starting material or solvent in organic synthesis.
