Decomposes in water or ethanol to form phosphoric acid and hydrogen bromide; violent reaction may occur when a large amount of water is suddenly added.
Uses:Used as a brominating agent in organic synthesis for the preparation of alkyl bromides and acyl bromides. Also employed as a catalyst in esterification reactions and as an intermediate in the synthesis of phosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers.
