It is a strong chlorinating agent that decomposes into chlorine and sulfur dioxide upon exposure to light or heating. Strongly corrosive. Uses:Used as a chlorinating reagent in organic synthesis for side-chain chlorination of aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorination of saturated hydrocarbons, and conversion of aldehyde groups to acyl chlorides.
