Physical Properties:Colorless or pale yellow viscous oily liquid, hygroscopic and unstable; decomposed rapidly by acids, alkalis and heat. Sparingly soluble in benzene and chloroform, slightly soluble in ether and amyl alcohol, freely soluble in water, ethyl acetate, dioxane and glacial acetic acid. Its calcium salt (D-calcium pantothenate) is a white crystalline powder with melting point 178-179°C and density 1.266 g/cm³.
Uses:Used in biochemical and pharmaceutical research and as an important precursor of Vitamin B5. Its calcium salt (D-calcium pantothenate) is widely applied as a feed additive, pharmaceutical and food additive to meet nutritional requirements in animals and humans. Due to high hygroscopicity of sodium pantothenate, the more stable calcium pantothenate form is preferred commercially.
