Physical Properties:This product is a black to dark brown powder or block, mainly composed of catechu tannic acid (25%~35%), catechin (2%~10%), catechu red, quercetin, and gum. Catechin appears as white needle-like crystals; it loses crystal water at 100°C, the anhydrous form melts at 177°C and decomposes at 205°C. It turns dark green with ferric chloride solution. It is slightly soluble in cold water and ether, readily soluble in hot water, ethanol, glacial acetic acid and acetone, and insoluble in benzene and chloroform.
Uses:This product is used as a black food coloring agent for coloring beverages, candies, pastries and alcoholic beverages. It is also used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products for coloration, providing auxiliary antioxidant and astringent functions.
