It is oxidized upon exposure to air and light, liberating iodine and gradually turning yellow. Density is about 3.5 g/cm³; it loses the water of crystallization when heated to about 73 °C.
Uses:Used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, commonly for the demethylation of esters and ring-opening reactions of epoxides. Used as an electrolyte additive in lithium-ion batteries. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used to synthesize iodine-containing drugs, and also serves as an analytical reagent and a precursor for preparing other iodides.
