Physical Properties:Pure product is a white powder, strongly alkaline, volatile and combustible. It is hygroscopic and decomposes upon contact with water to produce methanol and lithium hydroxide. Soluble in methanol and ethanol. A methanol solution containing about 10% lithium methoxide is a colorless transparent liquid; it volatilizes and may ignite on exposure to air, so it must be kept tightly sealed.
Uses:Mainly used in organic synthesis for transesterification and condensation reactions, and also as a catalyst or methylating agent.
