Physical Properties:White crystalline powder with a phenolic odor. Melting point 96°C, boiling point 278-280°C, density 1.224 g/cm³. Slightly soluble in water, readily soluble in ethanol, ether, benzene, chloroform and other organic solvents. Sublimes upon heating and is volatile with steam.
Uses:Used as a basic raw material or intermediate for dyes, pesticides, fragrances and rubber antioxidants, and as a color former in color photographic film. In the dye industry, it is used to produce Acid Yellow 1, Acid Orange 20, Mordant Black 3, Mordant Black 11, Solvent Red 3, Solvent Orange 5, etc. In the pesticide industry, it is a key intermediate in the synthesis of the insecticide carbaryl (Sevin). It is also used in pharmaceutical antiseptics and as an effective antioxidant for aldehydes, mineral oils and vegetable oils.
