Physical Properties:White crystalline powder with special odor, sublimes under vacuum. Soluble in water, ethanol and acetone; slightly soluble in chloroform, benzene and ether. Low volatility, decomposes on overheating. Itaconic acid is an unsaturated dibasic organic acid containing active unsaturated double bonds, capable of self-polymerization and copolymerization with other monomers, and can undergo addition, esterification and polymerization reactions.
Uses:Used as a comonomer for polyacrylonitrile fibers, and in the production of plasticizers and lubricant additives. It is also an important raw material in chemical synthesis for producing synthetic resins, synthetic fibers, plastics, rubber, surfactants and other chemical products.
