Physical Properties:EVOH copolymer is a highly crystalline material whose properties depend mainly on the relative concentration of comonomers. Generally, as ethylene content increases, gas barrier performance decreases, moisture resistance improves, and the resin becomes easier to process. The most distinctive feature of EVOH resin is its gas barrier effect: it improves flavor and quality retention by preventing oxygen ingress. Because of hydroxyl groups in the molecular structure, EVOH resin is hydrophilic and hygroscopic; gas barrier performance is affected after absorbing moisture. EVOH resin has excellent thermal stability among commercial barrier resins, and processing scrap can be recycled and reused; the regrind can contain up to 20% or more of EVOH. Density is approximately 1.19 g/cm³ and melting point approximately 183°C.
Uses:Used in food packaging, including aseptic packaging, hot-fill and retort pouches, for condiments (soy sauce), tomato sauce, fruit juice, edible pastes, meat products, dairy products and processed fruits; used for non-food packaging of solvents and chemicals; and used for gasoline tanks, gasoline tank liners, air-conditioning refrigerant containers and structural parts to reduce hydrocarbon or chlorofluorocarbon leakage. When used as a barrier layer in multilayer coextrusion structures, it effectively prevents oxygen ingress and preserves aroma and quality; in modified atmosphere packaging, it effectively retains carbon dioxide or nitrogen used to protect the product.
