Physical Properties:Density approx. 1.06 g/cm³; molecular weight 20,000-50,000, amorphous thermoplastic. Excellent resistance to water and steam; after 200 autoclave cycles at 132°C, tensile and impact strengths show no significant change. Good dimensional stability, low creep, and high electrical insulation. Long-term service temperature approx. -127 to 120°C; intermittent use without load up to 200°C, comparable to general thermosetting plastics. Produced by oxidative coupling polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol with copper salt (e.g., cuprous chloride) and amine catalysts in air or pure oxygen.
Uses:PPO is easy to process and can be extruded, injection molded, or compression molded. It is used to manufacture medical devices as a stainless steel substitute that withstands steam sterilization, and also for mechanical and electronic parts, insulating materials, etc. Blended with polystyrene (e.g., Noryl) and reinforced with 20%-30% glass or carbon fiber, it is an excellent engineering plastic and insulating material.
