Molecular Formula:ErCl3·6H2O
Physical Properties:Light pink crystalline solid, readily soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid, insoluble in diethyl ether. Loses partial water of crystallization when heated to 100°C and decomposes to erbium oxide at high temperatures. Density approx. 2.15 g/cm³.
Uses:Used as an intermediate for the preparation of other erbium compounds such as erbium oxide and erbium fluoride. It is applied as a rare earth doping source in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for optical fiber communication, and also used in the preparation of laser crystals and special ceramic coloring materials.
