Physical Properties:Colourless transparent scale-like crystals or white powder, odourless, with a slightly bitter and acidic taste. Melting point 170.9°C (decomposes); boiling point 300°C (loses all water to form boron trioxide); density 1.435 g/cm³ at 25°C; flash point none (non-flammable solid). Slightly soluble in cold water (about 57 g/L at 25°C), readily soluble in hot water, ethanol and glycerol; insoluble in acetone and diethyl ether. Weak monobasic acid (Ka = 5.8×10⁻¹⁰); neutralized by strong bases to form borates; heating causes dehydration successively to metaboric acid and pyroboric acid, ultimately yielding boron trioxide; acidity increases upon complexation with polyols such as glycerol. Molecular weight: 61.83.
Uses:Used in the production of heat-resistant glass, optical glass, borosilicate glass, and as a flux in ceramic glazes. In pharmaceuticals and daily chemicals, it serves as a skin disinfectant, ophthalmic washing solution, and as a preservative and pH adjuster in cosmetics. In agriculture, it is used as a boron micronutrient fertilizer to prevent boron deficiency in crops. It is also used as a wood preservative, flame retardant, soldering flux, electroplating additive, textile dye-fixing agent, analytical reagent and neutron absorber in nuclear reactors.
