Volatile, flammable, miscible with water, alcohols, ketones, esters and most organic solvents. It readily absorbs oxygen in air to form peroxides.
Uses:Used as an excellent solvent for surface coatings, anticorrosive paints, printing inks, tapes and film coatings, as well as a reaction solvent and additive in aluminum electroplating baths. As an organic synthesis intermediate, it is used to produce adiponitrile, adipic acid, butanediol, γ-butyrolactone, tetrahydrothiophene, and to synthesize PTMEG and polyurethane elastic fibers (spandex). In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used to produce carbetapentane, progesterone, rifamycin and other drugs.
