Physical Properties:Colorless to light yellow transparent liquid with a slight alcoholic odor. It is a mixture of ethyl esters of polysilicic acid produced by partial hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate. Relative density at 20°C is about 1.05–1.06 g/cm³; it has no fixed boiling point and gradually decomposes above about 165°C; closed-cup flash point is approximately 40–55°C. Miscible with ethanol, ether, esters and most organic solvents; hydrolyzes slowly in contact with water and tends to gel, so it should be stored tightly sealed and protected from moisture.
Uses:Used as a crosslinking agent and binder in silicone resins, silicone rubber, heat-resistant and anticorrosive coatings. Also applied in precision casting for preparation and strengthening of silica sol, and used as glass fiber impregnant and binder for ceramics and refractory materials.
