Physical Properties:Melting point: 131°C. It crystallizes from aqueous solution as the hemihydrate, which slowly effloresces to anhydrous ethylene urea at room temperature. Two crystal forms exist with a transition temperature of 80°C. Good thermal stability; no decomposition at 220°C. Boiling points: 192°C/2.13kPa, 187°C/1.33kPa, 160°C/0.4kPa. Slightly soluble in ether; aqueous solution is weakly alkaline with a pH of 10 for a 20% solution. Vigorous hydrolysis in ether, acid or alkali gives ethylenediamine and carbon dioxide.
Uses:Mainly used in the synthesis of third-generation penicillins such as mezlocillin sodium and azlocillin sodium, and widely used in the synthesis of antischistosomal drugs, chemosterilants, and fungicides/herbicides in pesticides. Used as a formaldehyde scavenger to remove free formaldehyde from finishing agents such as 2D resin, KB resin, urea-formaldehyde resin, and melamine-formaldehyde resin. Also used in the production of resins, plasticizers, paints, adhesives, etc.
