Physical Properties:White to grayish-white odorless, tasteless fine powder; insoluble in water and organic solvents; can rapidly hydrate, swell, and form a stable colloidal suspension or thixotropic gel in water. A 5% aqueous suspension is slightly alkaline with a pH of approximately 9.0–10.0.
Uses:Used as a thickener and binder in toothpaste (especially transparent/gel-type toothpaste) and gel products, and to stabilize suspensions and emulsions. In toothpaste, it provides a stable short-flow paste or gel structure, giving good shape retention on the toothbrush, flavor-release control, and easy rinse-off. It works synergistically with organic resin binders; combining it with soluble pyrophosphate is recommended to optimize fluoride bioavailability.
