Readily soluble in cold and hot water forming a viscous transparent solution; insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. Aqueous solution is an anionic polyelectrolyte, with pH of 1% aqueous solution 6.0-8.5. It exhibits excellent thickening, suspending, binding and film-forming properties.
Uses:Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is used as a thickener, stabilizer, suspending agent and binder in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, detergent, petroleum drilling, papermaking and textile industries. In food it serves as additive E466 to improve texture; in pharmaceuticals it acts as a tablet binder and disintegrant; in oilfield drilling fluids it is used as a filtration reducer and viscosifier.
