Soluble in hydrofluoric acid, hot sulfuric acid and alkalis; insoluble in water. It is the most stable oxide. Its hydrate Nb2O5·xH2O decomposes on heating and is soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid and strong alkalis.
Uses:Used in the manufacture of niobium salts, optical glass, electronic ceramics and catalysts. Also used as a high-refractive-index optical coating material and as a raw material for producing metallic niobium by reduction or electrolysis.
